In 1988, the World Evangelical Alliance (then the World Evangelical Fellowship) commissioned Brian O’Connell and Mike Morris to survey the global evangelical community on religious liberty and to draft a plan for a permanent commission. That four-year process culminated in a three-day consultation on persecution, held in the Philippines immediately before WEA’s 1992 General Assembly in Manila. By most accounts, it was the first global evangelical consultation devoted specifically to persecution. It was there that the Commission was formally established, and I was one of the commissioners appointed to carry it forward, alongside Brian O’Connell, Mike Morris, John Langlois, Paul Negrut of Romania, and Menes Abdul Noor of Egypt.

Two years later, in January 1994, Bishop Haik Hovsepian Mehr, superintendent of the Assemblies of God churches in Iran, was murdered for his outspoken defence of Mehdi Dibaj, a pastor imprisoned and sentenced to death on charges of apostasy. Newly appointed as the Commission’s Executive Director that same month, Brian O’Connell led the RLC in calling an emergency global “Day of Prayer for Iran”. The response from churches around the world was so overwhelming that, in 1996, the RLC formally launched the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, setting aside the first Sunday in November in the church calendar (a second Sunday was added later). More than 100 countries took part in that very first year.

It is also worth noting that, from around January 1996, a US-based coalition – including the Institute on Religion and Democracy, the National Association of Evangelicals, the Southern Baptist Convention, and others – was independently working towards a similar idea. Working through WEA’s North American office, the coalition helped promote the observance among mainline denominations, and its members’ accounts credit it with building much of IDOP’s early reach in the United States. This work developed alongside the RLC’s launch, which was the originating initiative and global in scope.

Leadership of the Commission passed from Brian O’Connell to Johan Candelin of Finland later in 1996, and I had the privilege of succeeding Johan in 2007. Across those years and since, I have watched IDOP grow from a single emergency campaign into an observance embraced by churches, denominations, and ministries across the world – evangelical, Catholic, and mainline alike – all answering the same call to remember and pray.

Thirty years on, the particulars have changed: the countries most in the headlines, the tools we use to communicate, and the sheer scale of what we now know about the persecuted Church. But the conviction behind IDOP has not changed at all. No member of Christ’s body suffers alone. What began as a response to one bishop’s martyrdom in Iran has become a sustained, global expression of exactly what Paul asked of Timothy and taught the Corinthians: to know one another’s suffering and to carry it together.

Agradezco profundamente a todos los que han orado por los cristianos perseguidos y los han apoyado a través de IDOP durante los últimos treinta años. Asimismo, agradezco a quienes continúan con esta labor, manteniendo viva su historia y su propósito en los años venideros.

Godfrey Yogarajah

Presidente del Consejo Internacional de la Alianza Evangélica Mundial (WEA)
Embajador para la Libertad Religiosa, WEA
Founding Commissioner (1992) and former Executive Director (2007-2021), WEA Religious Liberty Commission

Thirty Years of Solidarity IDOP began with a single emergency call to prayer.
